Car Phone Mount

Car Phone Mount

A 3D printed bracket that mounts a phone to the Ford Fiesta Mk7 screen — no drilling, no adhesives.

A 3D printed mount which allows a phone to be fitted to the top right of the Ford Fiesta Mk7’s inbuilt screen — no drilling, no adhesives, no permanent modifications to the car.

Designed to solve two problems: making it easier to reconnect CarPlay after temporarily using the phone to Shazam a song, and keeping Waze directions visible alongside the main screen.

Concept Sketching

I had a rough plan of how I wanted the parts to look, so started with a basic concept sketch to show the layout in simple terms before committing anything to CAD.

Reference Images and Dimensions

To create the part in CAD, I first needed accurate reference data. This meant taking photos from multiple angles and capturing enough dimensional information to model the geometry correctly.

I used a longer focal length (3× zoom) and shot from further away for better geometry representation — an early photo taken too close distorted the perspective enough to cause problems in CAD.

A way to mount a phone to the Ford Fiesta screen without modifying the car.

CAD Design Stage

With reference data gathered, the process moved into CAD. Starting with basic geometry to validate dimensions — printing small test pieces to check fit, adjusting, and reprinting. Some early parts were printed with a single wall and no infill to minimise material waste during iteration.

Getting the Final Shapes Sorted

With the basic geometry validated, the more complex shapes came next — checking the side radius dimensions, height, and how the top and bottom of the screen interface link together.

Adding the Phone Mount

Using the final screen adapter form as a base, the phone mount was added. I modelled the iPhone 13 Pro and MagSafe adapter from measurements taken with a Vernier calliper, positioned them in the assembly, then created the geometry needed to hold everything in place.

Final Notes

The design uses felt strips on the inside of the interface surface to protect the car’s screen plastic from abrasion. The final print quality wasn’t perfect — an extruder upgrade was in progress at the time — but the fit was solid and there’s no movement while driving.

The design is available on Printables: Ford Fiesta Mk7 screen mounted phone mount
